IPL 11 Retention Rules

Indian Premiere League is one of the biggest events of India in a year. This year Chennai Super Kings & Rajastan Royals way  back to IPL. Indian Premiere League council & Board of Control for Cricket sets new rules for retention in IPL 11. They used a new term RTM . Now the question is What is RTM? Now look at what is that .

Pre- Auction Retention

In Pre-auction retention,every franchisee can retain maximum 3 players.Players who have retain will not be part of the auction.

Right to Match (RTM)

As per new policy , IPL teams can retained five players only & they have to submit their individual list on 4 January 2018. The Right to Match(RTM) card help teams to regain their players even after they are sold to another franchise.

Let us take an example : If Kolkata Knight Riders didn’t retained Gautam Gambhir  and he’s sold to Mumbai Indians in 7 Cr. then KKR has opportunity to  retain Gambhir using their Right to match in 7Cr.

New Salary Cap

Last year ( 2017) , the franchises had 66 crores for auction, this is now increased by 14 Cr. i.e 80 Cr. For IPL 11 franchises has more money so this year it may be possible that new records have been made. Indian Premiere League Council sets new salary cap -82 crores for 2019 , 85 crores for 2020 & the franchises  will  have to spend at least 3/4 of their budget.

  • If franchise retain three capped players then they have to spend 33 crores from their purse , 15 crores for first one , 11 crores for second & 7 Crores for third.
  • If franchise retain two players then they have to spend 21 crores from their account , 12.5 for first player & 8.5 crores for second.
  • If franchisee will keep two players, then they will have to pay 21 crores from their pocket.
  • For uncapped player they have to spend only 3 crores from their purse.

Chennai Super Kings & Rajasthan Royals are back


CSK & Rajasthan Royal are back in IPL after 2 years because they  banned in year 2015 by supreme court due to fixing charges against them. Chennai & Rajasthan Royals were replaced by two teams from Pune & Gujarat respectively. They played in IPL 9 & IPL 10 with a name of Rising Pune Super Giants & Gujarat Lions. Now this year, Chennai Super kings & Rajasthan Royals  are back so IPL council cease Pune & Gujarat from 2018 season.

CSK & RR can retain those players who played for them in season 8 & then for RPs & GL respectively. Players who played only for RPS & GL in last two season will directly go to auction.

The players who played for CSK & RR in season 8 & then they played for franchise other than GL or RPS. So CSK & RR couldn’t retain these players. These players are only retained by the franchise for whom they played in last season.

Key Players whom CSK will able to retain : Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina , Ravindra Jadeja , Ravichandran Ashwin , Irfan Pathan , Francois Du Plessis , Brandon McCullum , Dwayne Smith , Ishwar Pandey, Andrew Tye , Dwayne Bravo ,

Key Players whom RR will able to retain : Steve Smith , Ajinkya Rahane , Ankit Sharma , James Faulkner ,  Rajat Bhatia.

Squad Size

Last season franchises are able to pick 27 players which include 9 foreigners & in this season(IPL11) franchise couldn’t pick more than twenty five players including 8 foreign players.
